Project Description:

The rain garden at Henninger High School is a partnership project with the Sunnycrest Park Association. The garden received a $2,000 grant from the Central New York Community Foundation for the project.

Native perennial species were chosen for the garden, that are drought-resistant to reduce maintenance during low precipitation periods. The species were picked to resemble another project nearby, the Freedom Garden at Huntington Elementary School. This allows students to learn about the plants in school and recognize them at other gardens in the community. The rainwater is collected from the roof in a barrel, and maintains the garden while teaching students about water runoff and conservation.

The project began construction in summer 2009 and was completed in 2010 and captures 29,000 gallons of stormwater annually.
