Project Description:
The Skiddy Park Enhancements Project was a collaboration between Onondaga County Save the Rain, the City of Syracuse Parks Department and the Near West Side Initiative’s new playground equipment project, and was the second Save the Rain project completed at Skiddy Park in 2011 (after the porous basketball courts).
This project consisted of removing all existing asphalt pavement in the park and installing new 10 foot wide flexible porous pavement walkways. An infiltration trench around the existing field house captures runoff from both Tully and Tioga streets. In addition, a pilot for the Save the Rain City Parks Water Spray Fountain Volume Reduction Initiative was implemented as part of this project. The existing water spray feature was removed and a new fixture was installed with a push button timer and control panel that will only allow the fountain to run at certain times during the day. This is a vast improvement compared to prior conditions in which the fountain ran all day and night from mid-May to mid-October. This measure alone prevents 493,000 gallons of water from entering the combined sewer each year. Overall, the project reduces 898,000 gallons of runoff annually.
