Construction photos of the underground infiltration trenches on East Water Street
Project Description:
The East Water Street Road Reconstruction is a partnership project with the City of Syracuse. The County green infrastructure work will be completed in advance of the City’s mill and pave project on East Water Street between Forman Avenue and Pine Street. By partnering with the City, the County is able to save capital dollars on restoration costs. The project began construction during the third quarter of 2021 and the infiltration trenches along the first block of the project were completed. The project was completed during the 2022 construction season.
For the green infrastructure project, 7 infiltration trenches are planned to be constructed to capture stormwater runoff that was previously entering the CSO 027 combined sewer. CSO 027 is one of the highest priority combined sewers remaining in the combined sewer system. Construction of the green infrastructure will involve connecting existing catch basins to infiltration trenches constructed underneath the road, where the stormwater will be stored and infiltrated into the ground. Incorporating green infrastructure into this portion of East Water Street will provide a significant benefit to the CSO basin 027 by removing 2.22 million gallons of stormwater runoff annually from the tributary combined sewers.
