Project Description:
Bank Alley required a sewer replacement in 2012. Through collaboration between the City of Syracuse and Onondaga County Save the Rain, a green infrastructure project was included with the construction of that sewer project to manage stormwater runoff. The project included stormwater planters built into the sidewalk and an underground stormwater storage system which holds runoff for slow release back to the replaced sewer main after a rain storm.
Following the sewer replacement, the renovation of this area included a green streetscape to transform both the Bank Street block and Bank Alley block (E. Fayette Street to E. Washington Street) into a pedestrian-friendly walkway. As displayed in the “after” picture above, the project included meandering brick sidewalks, planters with benches, and decorative street lighting.
The stormwater runoff reduction for this project is approximately 622,000 gallons a year. The sewer replacement and stormwater retention bed were completed in 2012. The streetscaping renovations were constructed in 2013.
