Project Description:
The Catherine Street Road Reconstruction is a partnership project with the City of Syracuse. The County green infrastructure work was completed in advance of the City’s road reconstruction program mill and pave project on Catherine Street. By partnering with the City, the County was able to save capital dollars on restoration costs. The project was completed in the 2021 construction season.
For the green infrastructure project, infiltration trenches were constructed along two blocks of Catherine Street from James Street to Green Street, and capture stormwater runoff that was previously entering the CSO 080A combined sewer. Construction of the green infrastructure involved connecting existing catch basins to infiltration trenches constructed underneath the road, where the stormwater will be stored and infiltrated into the ground. Incorporating green infrastructure into this portion of Catherine Street provides a significant benefit to the CSO basin 080A by removing 531,000 gallons of stormwater runoff from the combined sewers in the area annually.
